Facebook became a lawsuit in the USA due to facial recognition technologies. With the resulting case, Facebook was sentenced to pay compensation.
Facebook compensation penalty: $650 million
Facebook, the giant name of the social media industry, is often on the agenda regarding the privacy and security of user data. Even new features added by Facebook can leave the company in a difficult situation regarding security and privacy.
Finally, Facebook came up with claims that facial recognition technology does not inform users and collect data without permission. In fact, a lawsuit was filed against Facebook for the violation of the state of Illinois in the USA.
When you shared a photo with your friends on Facebook, Facebook was able to recognize the faces in the photo with the tag suggestion feature and identify who they were. However, the lack of any confirmation from the users for face recognition in this feature made Facebook a very difficult situation.
Along with the case, Facebook was punished with paying $400 for every user who uploaded photos since 2011. The court delegated the company to a fine of $550 million in the first place but later increased by $100 million to $650 million.
